Happy end of July!
Have you noticed that it seems that liquid lipsticks have been the thing that every brand has been trying to perfect for some years now?
But even though liquid lipsticks have been trending for some time now, finding a good transfer proof matte liquid lipstick at the drugstore can still be a challenge. More and more drugstore brands have been introducing their players to the game over the last year or so, but if I’m being honest, many of those formulations still leave a bit to be desired.
Earlier this year I did a review of Maybelline’s Super Stay 24 Color lipstick, which is an old school version of a liquid lipstick that is a 2 step application consisting of a color and a glossy top coat. I had some mixed feelings about the product at the end of the day, so when I heard they were releasing a new liquid lipstick product I wasn’t sure what to expect. Luckily, my friends at Influenster didn’t give me time to have hesitant feelings and sent me over Maybelline’s SuperStay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks in two colors.
I received the colors Pioneer and Lover. These lipsticks are packages in slightly textured rectangular plastic tubes with white caps. The body of the tubes corresponds with the color of the actual product, but is not see through. It’s a nice minimalist design for sure. The wand for the product is a bit long and has a diamond applicator tip. There is a light sweet scent in this lipstick that does fade away quickly after it sets.
I decided to try Lover first, a mauvy pink shade that seems like it would be quite flattering on many skin tomes and would fade away nicely should it wear off easily. Like mentioned earlier, I first saw the applicator I was kind of sure I would hate it, however after trying it out I quickly changed my mind! At first I thought it was much too stiff, but the shape and hardness of the applicator made it easy to line and fill in my lips. The little dent in the head of the doe foot also carried enough product that I could apply a layer without having to dip back in. I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of application.
The formula itself was smooth and quit opaque. The color went on evenly without any streaks or patches. Once applied I noticed the formula was a bit tacky. I waited for to dry further down but the sticky feeling never went away completely. But despite that, the formula did feel nice and comfy on my lips. It wasn’t drying or heavy at all. Unless I pressed my lips together and felt the stickiness, I could forget that it was there. But still, I was disappointed, figuring it meant that I would wear and transfer easily and quickly.
I actually received this product in the mail right before embarking on a trip to China, so I thought what better conditions to test it under than super hot, humid, and muggy summer weather?
I first wore this color while I was out sight seeing in Beijing, where it was too hot and humid for my Californian tush! Literally within minutes of applying this I decided that I desperately needed a Popsicle to keep my sanity. As I indulged in my salvation I noticed some crumbs of my lipstick on the Popsicle as I ate it. I was further disappointed, figuring I ruined my lip look within 10 minutes.
I peaked into a mirror and to see that I was wrong! My lipstick look just perfect as when I had applied it. I went back in for a second popsicle and still the color did not budge! Throughout the rest of the day I drank and ate plenty of things and really put this guy to the test. I am happy to report, event after 7 hours this Lover was still going strong!
I do want to note that under further inspection towards the end of the day I saw that it did wear off a little at the center of the lips, but since the color was a soft pinky color it wasn’t too noticeable. As for intentional removal, I had a little trouble removing this product with a simple makeup wipe and was only able to fully remove this using my trusty oil cleanser.
As mentioned before on my blog while I value longevity in a lipstick , I also am not a fan of removal being the equivalent of a battle against a beast. So mixed feelings there.
Another night I broke out the true red color in Pioneer. Since this shade was louder and much less subtle, when the center wore away as I drank and ate during the day, this was much more noticeable with Pioneer, so I did touch up during the day while wearing this shade.
Long winded post. I know. So here’s the TL;DR:
- Long wearing
- Opaque color
- Nice applicator
- Easy to layer for touch ups
- Affordable price point ($8ish)
- Lightly Scented, doesn’t linger
- Can be difficult to remove
- may wear off on the inner lip
I like this product, I want to try out another color and will pick up another one, maybe the shade Loyalist!
What are your thoughts? Have you tried these? Would you try these?
