Happy Thursday! We are about two weeks into October and I am finally starting to get into the Halloween spirit! It was pretty hard not to, especially after seeing everyone posting their Halloween nail art and swatches.
With Halloween in mind, I wanted my next source of inspiration to be haunting, rather than spooky. I shopped my plate collection for a stamp or design to jump out at me. And although a plate did inspire this look, I actually did not use any stamping!
I don’t know if there are any anime fans out there…but I have it as a guilty pleasure of mine 😉 I got hooked immediately during my middle school years and to this day one of my all time favorite series is Fullmetal Alchemist. If you haven’t seen it and are open to checking out an anime, I cannot recommend this series enough.
This series takes place in a fictional world where Alchemy is a very real and almost magical science. Alchemy follows the basic principle of equivalent exchange, which states to obtain something of equal value must be lost. Edward Elric is a young prodigy in the art of Alchemy who loses his mother to an incurable disease. Lost in his grief, Edward enlists the help of his younger brother, Alphonse, to commit the ultimate taboo of Alchemy and resurrect his lost mother from the dead. Their failed crime claims Edward’s left leg and Alphonse’s body. In an attempt to not lose his entire family, Edward sacrifices his right arm to save his brother’s soul.
The brothers survive the incident. While Alphonse’s soul resides in a suit of armor, Edward obtains a mechanical arm and leg. Edward vows to recover what they have lost by finding the legendary Philosopher’s Stone, even if it means becoming a State Alchemist and dog of the military.
Now that we’ve had a mini synopsis, I started my manicure with China Glaze’s Pelican Grey. Here I used two coats.
Each State Alchemist is issued a pocket watch to prove their status, since my manicure is inspired by this piece, I thought the peal finish would be perfect to mimic the inside of a metal watch. Now, I know you’re wondering, “I thought you said you wanted something haunting…this is a pocket watch?”
You’re right! It is just a watch, but my inspiration comes from the haunting message within it. After Edward gains certification, he engraves a reminder to himself to never forget October 3rd of 1910. Again, I highly suggest you watch the series, the whole thing while not a horror series, is quite haunting.
To recreate the engraving, I used a very thin short paint brush dipped into Pelican Grey mixed in with China Glaze Liquid Leather to create a deep grey. Top that with some China Glaze Matte Magic and there you have it, the inside of Edward Elric’s pocket watch! I really should have remembered this sooner and posted it on Oct 3rd, but there’s always next year 😉
Thank you for sitting through my fandom! I sometimes forget to express my much lamer side which loves creating fan nail art, but when it comes out, boy does it come out! I can’t promise I won’t be posting another FMA inspired nail look soon, considering those plates I rediscovered still have blue film and are burning a hole in my stamper.
In the mean time, might I suggest you totally watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? The story and world in this show is totally emulsive and the characters are quite compelling. This show does quite well, even among non anime fans!
Ok, ok, I’m done pushing this show on you! How about you tell me, what’s one of the more haunting shows you’ve ever seen that’s not exactly horror?
Thanks for stopping by, I’ll see you guys next week!
